&lt;br/&gt;This is the trailer for the fun-loving but poignant film that is a tribute to Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

      <title>We are about to attack Iran - october surprise / nuclear war</title>

&lt;br/&gt;going to war with a country that will spark the end of ANY stability in
&lt;br/&gt;the region and can ignite a world nuclear war.

&lt;br/&gt;This is one of those times that try our souls, when our smaller issues
&lt;br/&gt;need to take 2nd priority to the priority of dealling with this potential
&lt;br/&gt;end of everything.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Please forward this and seriously think about what YOU can do to try to
&lt;br/&gt;bring your centered attention back to reigning in the federal governement.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The American Revoltution happened for many reasons but much of it had to
&lt;br/&gt;do with the destruction of local economies and the use of the millitary to
&lt;br/&gt;maintain the East India Companies corporate monopoly on goods.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;We have gone so far beyond that now. The declaration of independence tells
&lt;br/&gt;us WHEN it is required of us to have a revolution:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;It says: we have unablienable rights. Governements exist to secure those
&lt;br/&gt;rights "deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed...
&lt;br/&gt;whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is
&lt;br/&gt;the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new
&lt;br/&gt;Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its
&lt;br/&gt;Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their
&lt;br/&gt;Safety and Happiness."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Bush is threatening our very lives and the lives of future generations.
&lt;br/&gt;Jefferson reminds us that governements should not be brought down for 
&lt;br/&gt;"light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn,
&lt;br/&gt;that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than
&lt;br/&gt;to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed.
&lt;br/&gt;But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the
&lt;br/&gt;same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it
&lt;br/&gt;is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to
&lt;br/&gt;provide new Guards for their future Security."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This last line is important for it tells us that when power is repeatedly
&lt;br/&gt;abused by someone with no right to use it. When it becomes evident that
&lt;br/&gt;there is a pattern to those abuses: that there is a "design to reduce them
&lt;br/&gt;under absolute despotism" we must stop this governemnt for it is no longer
&lt;br/&gt;the legitamate government of the poeople.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I don't know what we can do. It is so hard just to keep the bills paid,
&lt;br/&gt;and protests that just march down the streets of already liberal cities
&lt;br/&gt;obviously is not the answer. But there are people who are accountable who
&lt;br/&gt;must face the consequences of their actions and their complicency. And
&lt;br/&gt;there are many many many people who agree that this MUST END. We need to
&lt;br/&gt;put our efforts into building up resistance to this.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;There is another reason for public resistance. It is essential that people
&lt;br/&gt;who might decide to target the united states understand that we are
&lt;br/&gt;opposed to the government's actions. Many people around the world think
&lt;br/&gt;that we want this to happen. They don't understand the powerlessness of
&lt;br/&gt;being in this country. There must but global recognition that the US
&lt;br/&gt;citizenry does not support their dictator. If the world understands that
&lt;br/&gt;we oppose this, then maybe they won't nuke us. Maybe they will offer
&lt;br/&gt;support or asylum or whatever.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Power is all about inequality. It builds up even though it is not
&lt;br/&gt;supported. The vast majority do not want to be ruled, they want their
&lt;br/&gt;lives to work out to be simple and full of friends they want to not worry.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Currently their are calls for seccession in Vermont and many in Vermont
&lt;br/&gt;are calling for the Pentagon to stage a millitary coup in the event of an
&lt;br/&gt;attack on Iran. We may find we have strange allies in this time.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This is what we must do:
&lt;br/&gt;-get our checkbooks, bodies, rooms, homes, and gardens in order.
&lt;br/&gt;-Get out of the house and spend time with friends as much as possible,
&lt;br/&gt;-If you are under 35, get your conscientious objector status together (ask
&lt;br/&gt;me how)
&lt;br/&gt;-Visit your congressmen and senators' offices in person to tell them what
&lt;br/&gt;you think.
&lt;br/&gt;-Be prepared to get back into protest mode and decide on a few triggers
&lt;br/&gt;that will get you on the streets:
&lt;br/&gt;  -Will you go if bush removes due process rights (already has happened)
&lt;br/&gt;  -Will you stand if bush announces he will atack iran?
&lt;br/&gt;  -Will you take over buildings if he does atack iran?
&lt;br/&gt;  -Will you march on Washington D.C. if he drops a nuclear bomb?
&lt;br/&gt;WHAT ARE YOUR TIPPING POINTS? once you decide what you are committed to
&lt;br/&gt;responing to, hold yourself to it.

&lt;br/&gt;Last night, I was booked to play an event about an hour outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The hype behind this show was huge, they presold 700 tickets and they expected up to 3,000 people total. The promoters did an amazing job with the show.. they even made slipmats with the flyers on them to promote in local shops.

&lt;br/&gt;So, we got to the show around 11:15 or so and it was really cool. It was all outdoors, in a valley surrounded by huge mountains. They had an amazing light show flashing on to a mountain behind the site, the sound was booming, the crowd was about 1500 people thick and everything just seemed too good to be true really. Well... 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At about 11:30 or so, I was standing behind the stage talking with someone when I noticed a helicopter pulling over one of the mountain tops. I jokingly said "Oh look, here comes big brother" to the person I was with. I wasn't far off. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The helicopter dipped lower and lower and started shining its lights on the crowd. I was kind of in awe and just sat and watched this thing circle us for a minute. As I looked back towards the crowd I saw a guy dressed in camoflauge walking by, toting an assault rifle. At this point, everyone was fully aware of what was going on . A few "troops" rushed the stage and cut the sound off and started yelling that everyone "get the fuck out of here or go to jail". This is where it got really sticky. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;No one resisted. That's for sure. They had police dogs raiding the crowd of people and I saw a dog signal out a guy who obviously had some drugs on him. The soldiers attacked the guy (4 of them on 1), and kicked him a few times in the ribs and had their knees in his back and sides. As they were cuffing him, there was about 1000 kids trying to leave in the backdrop, peacefully. Next thing I know, A can of fucking TEAR GAS is launched into the crowd. People are running and screaming at this point. Girls are crying, guys are cussing... bad scene. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Now, this is all I saw with my own eyes, but I heard plenty of other accounts of the night. Now this isnt gossip I heard from some candy raver, these are instances cited straight out of the promoters mouth.. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;- One of the promoters friends (a very small female) was attacked by one of the police dogs. As she struggled to get away from it, the police tackled her. 3 grown men proceeded to KICK HER IN THE STOMACH. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;- The police confiscated 3 video tapes in total. People were trying to document what was happening out there. The police saw one guy filming and ran after him, tackled him and his camera fell, and luckily.. his friend grabbed it and ran and got away. priceless footage. That's not all though. Out of 1,500 people, there's sure to be more footage. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;- The police were rounding up the staff of the party and the main promoter went up to them with the permit for the show and said "here, I have the permit." The police then said, "no you don't" and ripped the permit out of his hand. Then, they put an assault rifle to his forehead and said "get the fuck out of here right now." 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Now.. let's get the facts straight here. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This event was 100% legal. They had every permit the city told them they needed. They had a 2 MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy for the event. They had liscenced security guards at the gates confiscating any alcohol or drugs found upon entry (yes, they searched every car on the way in). Oh, I suppose I should mention that they arrested all the security guards for possession. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Oh another interesting fact.. the police did not have a warrant. The owner of the land already has a lawsuit against the city for something similar. A few months ago, she rented her land for a party and the police raided that as well. And catch this, the police forced her to LEAVE HER OWN PERSONAL PROPERTY. That's right. They didnt arrest her, but made her leave her own property!!! 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Don't get it twisted, this is all going down in probably THE most conservative state in the USA. And this is scary.. a gross violation of our civil liberties. The police wanted this party shut down, so they made it happen. Even though everything about this event was legal. The promoters spent over $ 20,000 on this show and did everything they had to to make it legit, only to have it taken away from them by a group of radical neo-con's with an agenda. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This was one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed in person. I can't even begin to describe how surreal it was. Helicopters, assault rifles, tear gas, camoflauge-wearing soldiers.... why? Was that really necessary? 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This needs to be big news across the USofA. At least in our music scene (edm as a whole)... this could happen to any of us at any time. When we're losing the right to gather peacefully, we're also letting the police set a standard of what we can get away with. And I think that's BULLSHIT! 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The system fucked up last night... They broke up a party that was 100% legal and they physically hurt a lot of people there at the same time. The promoters already have 6 lawsuits ready to file with their lawyers and the ACLU is already involved. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I'm sure some pictures (and hopefully some video) will surface soon. I'll make sure to post them up here on 404, so you can see the Police State of America at work.

&lt;br/&gt;p.s. - there are more stories of police brutality that i'll post up later. gotta hit the airport soon. can't wait to get the fuck out of this shit hole state.

      <title>CRA act will turn US into a Theocracy</title>

&lt;br/&gt;It has recently come to my attention that Sen. Richard Shelby has put
&lt;br/&gt;forward an act called The Constitution Restoration Act
&lt;br/&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;It is really freaky and The CRA already has 28 sponsors in the House and
&lt;br/&gt;Senate. Sen. Richard Shelby's office beleives that "we have the votes for
&lt;br/&gt;passage."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;OKAY here's what it does:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, the Supreme Court
&lt;br/&gt;shall not have jurisdiction to review, by appeal, writ of certiorari, or
&lt;br/&gt;otherwise, any matter to the extent that relief is sought against an
&lt;br/&gt;entity of Federal, State, or local government, or against an officer or
&lt;br/&gt;agent of Federal, State, or local government (whether or not acting in
&lt;br/&gt;official or personal capacity), concerning that entity's, officer's, or
&lt;br/&gt;agent's acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or
&lt;br/&gt;government."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This means that, when a legal issue has to do with questioning christian
&lt;br/&gt;religious perspective, then the court and political system has no right to
&lt;br/&gt;intervine.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;It means that, if a judge or politician tries to intervine (by say, not
&lt;br/&gt;letting the 10 commandments appear in a classroom or deaming policy
&lt;br/&gt;unconstitution because it supports the christian agenda,) that are
&lt;br/&gt;committing an illegal act and will be subject to impeachment.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;It also means that international law does not apply and it would be
&lt;br/&gt;illegal for an elected official or a judge to invoke the Geneva
&lt;br/&gt;Convention, the Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
&lt;br/&gt;against Women, or any other international treaty, that elected official
&lt;br/&gt;would be jubject to impeachment.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;IF THIS PASSES, in other words, WE WILL FIND OURSELVES FULLY IN THE MIDDLE
&lt;br/&gt;OF A CHRISTIAN THEOCRACY. where christians are above the law and where
&lt;br/&gt;neocons can cloud themselves in the rational of "god speaks to me" or "i
&lt;br/&gt;am doing gods work"
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;this is scary and must be stopped if we are to maintain and restory ANY
&lt;br/&gt;scrap of our democracy.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;PLEASE PASS THIS ON. There has been no debate about this and it must be
&lt;br/&gt;known what is about to happen.

      <title>Concorde crash</title>

      <description>&lt;div&gt;I think a classic example of the lop-sided news coverage of most "news" services was on the day the Concorde jetliner crashed. On that day, the crash was the number one news story for most news outlets. But for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, the Bush-Cheney team-up was considered more newsworthy than the Concorde crash. I know we all have differing opinions on what's newsworthy. But the fact remains that the Concorde crash is a far more unique event than another round of presidential election politics.&lt;/div&gt;

      <title>Global Music Project worldwide launch on Feb 24th</title>

      <description>&lt;div&gt;Global Music Project.org (it's downloadable music, but the money goes to charity!) is currently gearing up for its worldwide launch on Feb 24th. In Seattle, it will be at Bada Lounge (7pm). We're also planning parties in the UK and Zambia Africa on that same day. IMPORTANT: If you know anyone in other parts of the globe that might like some exposure for their music and willing to have a launch party there, let us know.

      <title>News is boring to me</title>

      <description>&lt;div&gt;News is boring to me because most of the topics covered by "news" shows are the same topics they've covered for months or years. Sure, there are some folks who found the non-stop coverage of the Scott Peterson trial fascinating. But for my purposes, the news should consists primarily of issues and topics that few have seen before. The Scott Peterson trial at best should've been a news brief that would get occassional coverage. But of course the "news" media seem to get very excited by events that change very little over a long period of time. But since I have a SHORT attention span, the news -- which tends to change very little over a long period of time -- is very boring to me. At least C-SPAN frequently covers issues and topics that few have seen before.&lt;/div&gt;

      <title>The Culture War is stupid</title>

      <description>&lt;div&gt;The two major factions in the so-called Culture War seem to have agendas that are both consistent and inconsistent with my own agenda. I like the emphasis on morality from the "right wing" side of the war, and I like the emphasis on freedom from the "left wing" side of the war. But the problem I have with both sides is that I have a lot of cultural concepts that neither side may not appreciate. Or more to the point, I believe that culture is OPTIONAL, not MADATORY. With all the freedom they say we in the U.S. supposedly have, then anyone can adopt or reject or readopt any kind of culture they want. But more often than not, I seem to constantly hear the message that we must all adopt certain cultural values, no questions asked. But I'm asking question anyway.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Similarly, I'm reminded of something I heard Marilyn Manson say not long after Bush got in the first time. He basically said that having a conservative president would compell creative-types to be even more creative as an act of defiance. From what I've seen over the past four years, most creative-types have gotten horribly bland, boring and useless. I mean, why is every other TV show a "reality" show? Because the so-called "creative" people have stopped being creative. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;So I guess when it comes to the Culture War, like with many other things, I'm on my own. Further proof that my life is like the war between the Earth Alliance and the Minbari Federation and I'm the Earth Alliance.

      <title>Alternative press is not enough</title>

      <description>&lt;div&gt;They say that if you are dissatisfied with "news" from the mainstream press, you should go to the alternative press. For some, that sounds like good advice. For me it sounds pointless. I say this for two reasons: (1) The alternative press is just as biasED and disinterested in the truth as the mainstream press is. And (2) even if the alternative press is more truthful than the mainstream press, I am still going to have to live in a world where most people get their "news" from the mainstream press. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;On the first point, I think a good example there was when FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting or as I like to call them UNFairness and INAccuracy in Reporting) mentioned the mainstream press's disregard of the Cassini space probe's dangerous nuclear power core as one of the most censored stories of 1997. Yet at the same time, FAIR didn't mention a space-related story that was even more censored than Cassini's nuclear power core: The experimental reusable vertical-take-off-and landing rocket craft known as the Delta Clipper. Yes, people should have been allowed to know about the dangers of Cassini's nuclear power core. But don't the public have just as much right to know about the Delta Clipper -- a non-nuclear, pollution-free launch vehicle?
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;About the second point, knowing about alternative news won't exactly do you any good if you live in a world that primarily operates on a different set of principles. It's comparable to knowing that the Earth is round while the majority think the Earth is flat. I mean, how can you adaquately employ such alternative knowledge when the majority are likely to punish you for it despite the fact that you're right?
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;So what is the solution to the problem of mainstream and alternative news? I definitey don't have the solution to that problem. All I can say about it is that that's what we get for living in a world without consensus.&lt;/div&gt;

      <title>FBI Seizes IMC Servers in the UK</title>

&lt;br/&gt;&gt;FBI Seizes IMC Servers in the UK
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;US authorities issued a federal order to Rackspace's office in the US
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;ordering them to provide Indymedia's hardware located in London to the
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;requesting agency. Rackspace is one of Indymedia's web hosting providers
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;with offices in the US and London. Rackspace complied, without first
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;notifying Indymedia, and turned over Indymedia's server in the UK. This
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;affects some 20+ Indymedia sites worldwide.
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Since the subpoena was issued to Rackspace and not to Indymedia, the
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;reasons for this action are still unknown to Indymedia. Talking to
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Indymedia volunteers, Rackspace stated that "they cannot provide
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Indymedia with any information regarding the order." ISPs have received
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;gag orders in similar situations which prevent them from updating the
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;concerned parties on what is happening.
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;It is unclear to Indymedia how and why a server that is outside the US
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;jurisdiction can be seized by US authorities.
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;At the same time a second server was taken down at Rackspace which
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;provided streaming radio to several radio stations, BLAG (linux distro),
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;and a handful of miscellanous things.
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;The last few months have seen numerous attacks on independent media by
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;the US Federal Government. In August the Secret Service used a subpoena
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;in an attempt to disrupt the NYC IMC before the RNC by trying to get IP
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;logs from an ISP in the US and the Netherlands. Last month the FCC shut
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;down community radio stations around the US. Two weeks ago the FBI
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;requested that Indymedia takes down a post on the Nantes IMC that had a
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;photo of some undercover Swiss police and IMC volunteers in Seattle were
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;visited by the FBI on the same issue. On the other hand, Indymedia and
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;other independent media organisations were successfull with their
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;victories for example against Diebold and the Patroit Act. Today
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;however, the US authorities shut down IMCs around the world.
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;The list of affected local media collectives includes Ambazonia,
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles,
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Marseille (all France), Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague,
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, part of the Germany site, and the global
&lt;br/&gt;&gt;Indymedia Radio site.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;Voting is important, but it is not enough. If we want to build a true
&lt;br/&gt;democracy inside the United States we need to go beyond merely voting at
&lt;br/&gt;the ballot box and vote with our voices, our time and our feet as we
&lt;br/&gt;educate, organize, and march. We must vote with our hands as we build
&lt;br/&gt;sustainable community alternatives, and vote with our imaginations as we
&lt;br/&gt;show that a better world truly is possible, and it is our responsibility

&lt;br/&gt;The opportunity and challenge over the next year is to proactively define
&lt;br/&gt;democracy. What does democracy look like in our communities? In our daily

&lt;br/&gt;Given the massive levels of consumption by the US, the tendency towards
&lt;br/&gt;violent unilateralism, and the increasing withdrawal of the U.S.
&lt;br/&gt;government from international law and mechanisms for accountability, this

&lt;br/&gt;to Do About the United States?" is really a question for us, here inside

&lt;br/&gt;BREAKING NEWS: The FBI and the US Secret Service is again engaging in a fishing expedition to route out dissenting viewpoints, harass people who are simply exercising their free speech rights, and intimidate others from exercising their right to protest in connection with the Republican National Convention. To quote one indymedia volunteer, regarding New York Indymedia:

&lt;br/&gt;"It has come to my attention, that our hosting provider, Calyx Internet Access, has been under harassment and scrutiny by the United States Secret Service in a blatant attempt to disrupt our relationship. Furthermore, it has been revealed to me that my contact information, was required to be disclosed to the government, presumably to begin directly harassing me. The SS did not contact the IMC directly in relation to this matter, but instead felt it prudent to put a strain on a place which we do business with. The agents attempted to circumvent Indymedia by contacting Calyx by phone, originally without a warrant or subpoena, in order to obtain user connection logs regarding a particular post on an Indymedia site. The post in question is a repost by an anonymous person containing information that is already available all over the Internet, and publicly available in other forms."

&lt;br/&gt;WASHINGTON -- Republican staff members of the US Senate Judiciary Commitee infiltrated opposition computer files for a year, monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing on copies to the media, Senate officials told The Globe.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;From the spring of 2002 until at least April 2003, members of the GOP committee staff exploited a computer glitch that allowed them to access restricted Democratic communications without a password. Trolling through hundreds of memos, they were able to read talking points and accounts of private meetings discussing which judicial nominees Democrats would fight -- and with what tactics.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The office of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms William Pickle has already launched an investigation into how excerpts from 15 Democratic memos showed up in the pages of the conservative-leaning newspapers and were posted to a website last November.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;With the help of forensic computer experts from General Dynamics and the US Secret Service, his office has interviewed about 120 people to date and seized more than half a dozen computers -- including four Judiciary servers, one server from the office of Senate majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, and several desktop hard drives.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;But the scope of both the intrusions and the likely disclosures is now known to have been far more extensive than the November incident, staffers and others familiar with the investigation say.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The revelation comes as the battle of judicial nominees is reaching a new level of intensity. Last week, President Bush used his recess power to appoint Judge Charles Pickering to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, bypassing a Democratic filibuster that blocked a vote on his nomination for a year because of concerns over his civil rights record.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Democrats now claim their private memos formed the basis for a February 2003 column by conservative pundit Robert Novak that revealed plans pushed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, to filibuster certain judicial nominees. Novak is also at the center of an investigation into who leaked the identity of a CIA agent whose husband contradicted a Bush administration claim about Iraqi nuclear programs.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Citing "internal Senate sources," Novak's column described closed-door Democratic meetings about how to handle nominees.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Its details and direct quotes from Democrats -- characterizing former nominee Miguel Estrada as a "stealth right-wing zealot" and describing the GOP agenda as an "assembly line" for right-wing nominees -- are contained in talking points and meeting accounts from the Democratic files now known to have been compromised.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Novak declined to confirm or deny whether his column was based on these files.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"They're welcome to think anything they want," he said. "As has been demonstrated, I don't reveal my sources."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;As the extent to which Democratic communications were monitored came into sharper focus, Republicans yesterday offered a new defense. They said that in the summer of 2002, their computer technician informed his Democratic counterpart of the glitch, but Democrats did nothing to fix the problem.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Other staffers, however, denied that the Democrats were told anything about it before November 2003.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The emerging scope of the GOP surveillance of confidential Democratic files represents a major escalation in partisan warfare over judicial appointments. The bitter fight traces back to 1987, when Democrats torpedoed Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court. In the 1990s, Republicans blocked many of President Clinton's nominees. Since President Bush took office, those roles have been reversed.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Against that backdrop, both sides have something to gain and lose from the investigation into the computer files. For Democrats, the scandal highlights GOP dirty tricks that could result in ethics complaints to the Senate and the Washington Bar -- or even criminal charges under computer intrusion laws.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"They had an obligation to tell each of the people whose files they were intruding upon -- assuming it was an accident -- that that was going on so those people could protect themselves," said one Senate staffer. "To keep on getting these files is just beyond the pale."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;But for Republicans, the scandal also keeps attention on the memo contents, which demonstrate the influence of liberal interest groups in choosing which nominees Democratic senators would filibuster. Other revelations from the memos include Democrats' race-based characterization of Estrada as "especially dangerous, because . . . he is Latino," which they feared would make him difficult to block from a later promotion to the Supreme Court.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;And, at the request of the NAACP, the Democrats delayed any hearings for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals until after it heard a landmark affirmative action case -- though a memo noted that staffers "are a little concerned about the propriety of scheduling hearings based on the resolution of a particular case."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;After the contents of those memos were made public in The Wall Street Journal editorial pages and The Washington Times, Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch, Republican of Utah, made a preliminary inquiry and described himself as "mortified that this improper, unethical and simply unacceptable breach of confidential files may have occurred on my watch."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Hatch also confirmed that "at least one current member of the Judiciary Committee staff had improperly accessed at least some of the documents referenced in media reports." He did not name the staffer, who he said was being placed on leave and who sources said has since resigned, although he had apparently already announced plans to return to school later this year.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Officials familiar with the investigation identified that person as a legislative staff assistant whose name was removed from a list of Judiciary Committee staff in the most recent update of a Capitol Hill directory. The staff member's home number has been disconnected and he could not be reached for comment.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Hatch also said that a "former member of the Judiciary staff may have been involved." Many news reports have subsequently identified that person as Manuel Miranda, who formerly worked in the Judiciary Committee office and now is the chief judicial nominee adviser in the Senate majority leader's office. His computer hard drive name was stamped on an e-mail from the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League that was posted along with the Democratic Senate staff communications.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Reached at home, Miranda said he is on paternity leave; Frist's office said he is on leave "pending the results of the investigation" -- he denied that any of the handwritten comments on the memos were by his hand and said he did not distribute the memos to the media. He also argued that the only wrongdoing was on the part of the Democrats -- both for the content of their memos, and for their negligence in placing them where they could be seen.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"There appears to have been no hacking, no stealing, and no violation of any Senate rule," Miranda said. "Stealing assumes a property right and there is no property right to a government document. . . . These documents are not covered under the Senate disclosure rule because they are not official business and, to the extent they were disclosed, they were disclosed inadvertently by negligent [Democratic] staff."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Whether the memos are ultimately deemed to be official business will be a central issue in any criminal case that could result. Unauthorized access of such material could be punishable by up to a year in prison -- or, at the least, sanction under a Senate non-disclosure rule.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The computer glitch dates to 2001, when Democrats took control of the Senate after the defection from the GOP of Senator Jim Jeffords, Independent of Vermont.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;A technician hired by the new judiciary chairman, Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, apparently made a mistake that allowed anyone to access newly created accounts on a Judiciary Committee server shared by both parties -- even though the accounts were supposed to restrict access only to those with the right password.

&lt;br/&gt;Police set up a zone for the protesters to keep them some 150 yards from where the president will stand at Dr. King's crypt. However, 300 to 400 protesters who arrived in advance of the president's visit refused to step back to the cordoned-off area and instead set up camp just about 50 yards from the crypt. Officers took one protester into custody and blocked the view of the others with buses.

&lt;br/&gt;About 3:45 p.m., the president will lay a wreath at the late civil rights leader's crypt at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. The president announced his visit on Friday. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;But the MLK March Committee, a group of area civil rights activists who worked with King, say they have worked for months on a program to honor the civil rights leader at Ebenezer Baptist Church, across the street. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"They told us that the Secret Service wanted us out of there by 2 p.m.," said the Rev. James Orange. "We are not leaving the church." The Ebenezer program from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. focuses on human rights.
